It's a fair question — a Thermomix isn't cheap, and van life is all about doing more with less. So is it actually worth it when space, water and power are limited? Here's my honest take, after cooking with one on the road.
I'll be upfront: I love mine, and I now help other people discover them. But I'd much rather you make the right decision for you than talk anyone into something that doesn't fit their life. So here's the balanced version.
The genuine pros for small-space living
- It replaces a drawer full of gadgets. Blender, food processor, scales, steamer, and a cooking pot in one. In a tiny kitchen, reclaiming that cupboard space is huge.
- Guided cooking means no thinking. It walks you through each step on screen, so there's no juggling, no second-guessing, and far less that can go wrong.
- One thing to wash. Most meals happen in the one bowl. When water is precious, that matters more than you'd think.
- It's hands-off. It chops and cooks while you do something else — set up camp, walk the dog, sit outside with a drink.
The honest cons
- It's an investment. There's no getting around the upfront cost. For some budgets that alone is the deciding factor, and that's completely valid.
- Power draw. It needs a decent electrical setup. If you're fully off-grid with a small battery bank, you'll want to check it suits your system.
- It takes up worktop space when in use. Compact, but not nothing — worth picturing where it'll live.
- It's a learning curve at first. A week or two in and it clicks, but day one can feel like a lot.
So — who is it actually right for?
In my honest opinion, it's worth it if you genuinely want to keep cooking proper meals on the road but find the faff of a tiny kitchen is putting you off — and if you have the power setup and the budget to suit. If you're happy with a single hob, a sharp knife and simple meals, you absolutely don't need one to eat well in a van.
The best way to know is to see it working in a space like yours, with your questions answered, before you spend anything.
